La Page blanche et la mort
Britten crée La Mort à Venise sur un livret de Myfanwy Piper au Festival d'Aldeburgh en 1973 en s'inspirant de la nouvelle éponyme de Thomas Mann. Dans cet ouvrage, un écrivain, Aschenbach, en panne d'inspiration quitte l'Allemagne pour Venise, où il tombe amoureux d'un jeune garçon. Alors que le choléra menace, il refuse de fuir loin de ce dernier.
Le ténor Douglas Nasrawi incarne aujourd'hui Aschenbach sous la direction d'Uwe Sandner :
Cet air se situe au début de l'Acte I, lorsqu'Aschenbach, un auteur allemand à succès, ne parvient pas à trouver l’inspiration pour sa prochaine œuvre (« My mind beats on »).
